Museet grundades av Artur Hazelius 1873 efter en resa genom Dalarna där han tyckte sig se hur allmogesamhället sakta byttes ut mot det moderna industrisamhället. Han ville då samla in och spara minnen från den kultur som varit och startade Skandinavisk-etnografiska samlingen i oktober 1873.
